Bruce, et al,  I have seen such a forge used as a demo forge in England.
The forge was about the size of a rivet forge and only small items were
being heated but it seem to work very well.

wasn't there a thread YEARS ago about a gas forge that heated a pile of
ceramic pellets, simulating a bed of coal.  It sounded interesting, but I've
never tried it myself.
