Out here there used to be 2 kinds of rat /ground squirrel /gopher poison/coyote poison. 
There was the ever popular strychnine  and the blood thinner warfarin . 
I don't think you can get the strychnine kind around here any more. 
It passes right up the food chain. 
Warfarin is one of the oldest common heart medicines that inhibits clotting. 
To use it as a poison is a game of trying for a minimum dose to body mass, 
 and the hope is that the difference between the body mass of the  rat  and ratter 
 are enough to  prevent heart attacks in the ratter. 
At least that was my understanding. Probably newer stuff out.

Beyond "I saw it on the Internet," has anyone actually had another animal 
get sick or die from eating a poisoned rat?
