[TheForge] Acme Hold down

Good suggestions Jerry.
My own preference is to use a motorcycle chain loop with attached board for a foot pedal so you don't have to balance on one solid foot while placing tooling.
Speculated that it might be worth wiring a little coil spring to the underside of the chain, where it'd hit the edge of the anvil face and would eliminate the need to pick the chain up before inserting the hot stuff.

At one time or another I've seen most of these fast hold downs and made a
couple poor sisters, not worth talking about. The one I really liked was
just a closed loop of chain with a short straight piece with small hooks at
each end for the stirrup. You can hang it out of the way and just slip it
over the anvil and use it. Very fast and easy.

The work cooling too fast has an easy solution, just keep a fairly heavy
piece of steel handy, say 3/4" or thicker and a couple inches square. Heat
it in the fire and put it on the anvil for a hot spot to punch on. Put a
couple holes in it and it's a hot bolster. Make it 6"-8" long so it fits
under the chain hold fast and you're golden. Call it a hot saddle or
whatever, we sometimes use them for welding in cold weather. Sometimes it's
just not possible to get the anvil warm enough to make welding practical and
I have two 100lb. pieces of steel I heat on the stove to warm the anvil.
They're not bat upsetting plates either.

Here is my solution for a quick advance hold down. I use 1/2 of a pipe clamp
mounted on a short 3/4" pipe in the hardie hole. The shaft collar keeps it
from sliding down and there is a pipe nut on the bottom side to keep it in
place. Works fast.
