I concur with finding a real silversmith.
Question:
I also am RC. Something about the question jumped out at me.
Are you sure it is a family chalice being made into a cup and not a 
family cup being made into a chalice?
Generally speaking no liturgical furniture would be reused in the 
fashion you describe.
