Bert Shaw, the guy that got me interested in iron the first place, had
a varied career including shoeing horses and mules, farm repair,
re-tiring circus wagons and forging elephant chains.  When I met him,
circa '67, he had a copy of one of the volumes of the *original* Sonn,
borrowed from the Amherst, Mass. town library, open on his bench.
Opining that he was to old -- maybe the age I am now -- to do "real"
blacksmithing, he was knocking off copy after copy of the most
interesting pieces in Sonn.

The next time a saw a copy of the original, in a private library maybe
15 years later, I wasn't allowed to touch it lest I soil it.
