[TheForge] Gummy plastic coating for augers, etc.?

Today I had a need for a product I've seen but never used myself.  It seems
to me that in years past I would get (wood) auger bits in which the cutting
end (auger screw and cutting blades) had been dipped in some sort of
plastic material -- that was soft and easily removable.  The idea,
apparently, was to minimize damage before first use.

Does anyone know what this material was or whether it's still available?
