I have some old fashion pipe wrenches that have a thumb screw that pushes on 
a block that the pivot bolt goes through.  When you tighten the thumb screw 
it pushes the pivot closer together and reduces the size of the pipe they 
will grip.  If you redesign the jaws to hold steel there is no reasion that 
you couldn't have an adjustable pair of tongs. If you had two or three pair 
with different Jaw designs, it could cover almost all your holding needs.

I'll have to dig them out and see how hard they would be to modify or copy.
