Blacksmithing, for me, is mental health time so taking a long time to 
learn is just fine.
  In my day job I can recognize the competition between the profitable, 
but boring and the interesting learning curve jobs that are neutral or 
lose money.
  My personal compromise is to actively seek the latter ones but limit 
myself to just one or two a year. That way I keep myself interested and 
solvent.
