Thanks Peter &Phoebe - I will keep that in mind if it comes up again, but I don't see that big a sign in my future again. But you never know. The Welding arc and compressed air would have worked like a plasma cutter. I can remember as a kid the guys downstairs in Hart Ironworks using that method to cut some stuff up and I have done it myself. It leaves the edges a little rough, but I figured that would take just as long as cutting it with a grinder so it was out. Besides that is messy as heck even with steel, aluminum would be a real nightmare.
Jer, I don't anything about Oxy lances, that's the thing that looks like a giant sparkler, burns underwater, etc. right?
See ya at the forge!

Now I'm thinking about it, has anyone here tried an Oxy lance on al? I know
an air arc will work but that's a different kettle of worm cans.

Vince, it might be that you could have melted through using the extra
exothermic heat from cutting some scrap steel atop the aluminum and a
cutting torch. Good use for an old, reamed out tip.

Thanks Bruce, Ries,
I have melted aluminum at the forge in a welded pipe and was surprised
when I got no response from the torch. I didn't think of hitting it with a
big hammer after I heated it up. I will have to keep that in mind. I just
figured it was because of the size I couldn't get enough heat to stay long
enough. I was doing a favor and didn't have time to cut it with a grinder,
neither did they because they took them in the small dump truck that they
didn't want use for whatever reason. I was just... dumb-founded when that
happened, I didn't think there was much that a torch couldn't cut through,
but live and learn. See ya at the Forge!!
