Vince, it might be that you could have melted through using the extra exothermic heat from cutting some scrap steel atop the aluminum and a cutting torch. Good use for an old, reamed out tip.

     I have melted aluminum at the forge in a welded pipe and was surprised when I got no response from the torch. I didn't think of hitting it with a big hammer after I heated it up. I will have to keep that in mind. I just figured it was because of the size I couldn't get enough heat to stay long enough. I was doing a favor and didn't have time to cut it with a grinder, neither did they because they took them in the small dump truck that they didn't want use for whatever reason. I was just... dumb-founded when that happened, I didn't think there was much that a torch couldn't cut through, but live and learn.  See ya at the Forge!!
