For future reference, you can put aluminum over a fire to heat the whole
piece. When a pine stick will dray a black "crayon" mark on it, it's ready
for forging. If the crayon mark burns off (largely disappears) as it
forms, you can probably knock the aluminum apart with a hammer -- it's
beyond forging temperature. That trick is used for remelting aluminum
blocks, etc., that are too large for the crucible.
