Anecdotal answer:  I have a squirrel cage blower over my welding
table.  It doesn't *appear* to have a stupendous suck, that is,
welding fumes sometimes escape if the work isn't directly under the
very small hood that's 4' above the table.

But if I turn it on while I have a forge fire lit and forget to open
at least one door in my already not-very-tight building, the 16'x13"
forge flue draws backwards and fills the shop with coal smoke. So it's
moving quite a lot of air pretty fast.

There was a rash of furnace replacements around here.  Squirrel cage
blowers started showing up at the roadside on Big Junk Day and I
collected a couple in good condition. One in place with a junk washing
machine motor and a spare blower just in case.  Price was right.
