I agree about the heat and soot being issues.

At one time venting consisted of just a whole in the roof, so stictly 
speaking a flue is not necessary.
Depending on your standards a large squirrel cage fan mounted high near 
the forge could do the trick.
I have lived with such a set up. One advantage is that the high 
percentage of dilution air makes smoke much less visible.

A major problem is that , while it is nice during the summer, any 
heating is not happening during the winter.
