Andy,
My drive not only is long and down hill, I too have a clay base. My biggest
problem is washing during heavy rains. To combat this I have made two
moves, first I have small wing dams every 10-20 yards to divert running
water off the road, second when there is a bad washout I fill the rut with
large rocks and broken bricks before covering with gravel. As long as I
keep the diversion dams in good shape I have very few washouts. And with the
ruts filled with large rocks the washouts that I do have are not as bad. It
works for me.
