Not to flog a dead horse...
The original article appeared in Home Shop Machinist magazine and
featured a test of force required to move rusted dowels fit into a
reamed hole that were allowed to corrode.
The author later responded to numerous question about the separation of
Acetone and ATF. He stated that he had used trichloroethane as a
solvent, but as that was deemed to dangerous, he substituted acetone in
the article without actually trying it.
It has since been reported that separation of the two liquids has
occurred for some, others say they have no problem. Further speculation
ensued regarding differences between Mercon v Dexron II et all. It
appears that the additives in the two types ( now 4 or 5 types ) of
ATF's are incompatible and just different.
More uses's of ATF see:
http://handloads.com/articles/default.asp?id=9
All I can say is the type I used did not mix well with acetone. If you
experience separation as some have, try using mineral spirits instead of
the acetone.
