Propane!   Early on, think coal (hack, cough) or charcoal (NOT 
briquettes) -- just tell the neighbors that you are fast 
barbecuing.  Propane is wonderful but an open forge is a better way 
to learn the trade (IMHO) and generally more versatile and 
cheaper.  Once you are thoroughly bitten by the bug, then think 
propane for production or pattern welding.
