I don't trust them and keep ours in their own separate little fireproof building...
But then, we are using propane and have a lot of bonus crap in our water,
as well as being our own fire department.

These valves have a sensor under the heater and close a circuit when a drop of water touches it. This activates a control that mechanically closes the water input line. With the line pressure off, the tank will leak minimal amount of water. They run on 120 v or battery. Not cheap, about $100 or so but if a heater does not have a place to drain in event of failure, ...this is about all you can do. Many older houses in TX built on slabs don't have a way to plumb a heater drain pan. (Most newer homes have this feature.)
