To get started not much is needed in terms of cash. Some ingenuity is a
big plus.
Oh, you won't have all the bells and whistles, but then again you
probably wouldn't know how to use them either.
Simple forge of your fuel choice should be able to make for around $100,
maybe less.
Simple hammer set modified from estate sales less than $50.
Tongs, start with a channel lock pliers and use it to make your first
set of real tongs. As you probably already have the channel lock you are
just into materials cost. Depending on you luck and scrounging ability
free to $12 or so.
Shop tools that you may have of can obtain from estate sales cheaply ,
hacksaw, bench grinder, largish vise ( just be careful how you use it)
hand grinder for sanding disks , wire cup brush, grinding disks, cold
chisels
Remember, if you see something you can imagine as a useful toll and it
is reasonably priced it is a tool, materials or trade stock.
Anvil, could be pricey, could be cheap to free depending on the
aforementioned abilities and how you define "anvil"
At that point you can start making things. As you make them you will
constantly be finding new tools to make or obtain. I call this the " Man
it would be handy if I had..." rule.
This keeps expenses down and you tooling within you experiential grasp.
I started out with some discretionary cash and ended up with a bunch of
neat stuff that I hardly ever use, as it looked like a good idea , but
ended up not suiting my style and interests.
Cash can be a trap.

I am trying to use crowdsourcing to fund my first backyard smithy, and would like to know if it would be alright to post a link to it on here? I have been taking classes and doing vast amounts of reading, and would like to be able to continue learning more often than an open forge in a studio would allow me since there are none very close to me. Thank you for your time.
