Look for a better one about heat treating. My Mechanical Engineer's
Handbook has a little bit about very nearly everything which means it
doesn't have very much about any particular thing.

That's a perfectly good speculation. :-)  I don't know much more that
what I copied from the book.  I did some reading decades ago but have
forgotten what (if anything) I learned then.  Heating through and
through seems an obvious requirement to get the desired effect through
and through.
