Single data-point factoid, disregarding others' comments :-)

I made a tine for my TroyBilt rototiller, forged from new truck
spring stock offcut.  Forged, bent, drilled, ground to get a slightly
sharper edge.  No heat treatment, just air cooled after forging.  It's
been going several years now.  Gets both bending load and impact
(rocky soil) in a biggish garden.

Probably a bit thicker than Bruce is looking for. But I'd make my
first try with a piece of new truck spring.
