[TheForge] Crowdsourcing Question

I have a broken Hay-Budden that I plan on fixing with a chunk of fork lift
fork. I already have the piece cut and shaped, just waiting for time and
hot weather to jump into welding it together.

Bob, Not only a cheap route to an anvil, but fork lift forks are very good
high strength steel. At least 1045 but more likely 4140 for forks from a
commercial fork lift.

I was at a friends shop yesterday and he showed me his first anvil. He had
cut up a fork lift fork into 5 pieces and stacked them up and welded then
together. The top piece was a little longer than the rest so it stuck over
on both ends. He ground a radius on one end and drilled the other for a
pritcheral.

He got the fork free, so just had time and a welding rod invested in the
anvil. He was working as a welder at the time and the anvil was used in the
shop where he worked, so I think he probably got the rod for free too. When
he retired, they let him take the anvil with him.

Just another example of getting started on the cheep. It doesn't take money,
it takes motivation.
