I tried the knuckle height & found it a bit too low too. What bothered me was that I wasn't hitting the hammer face squarely on the work. Seemed the far edge lf the hammer hit first. I raised it a bit and it seems better maybe. It's a 500 euro anvil so it's a chore to raise. The base is  bunch of 4x4 blocks on end w threaded bars running thru it w nuts holding it all together & the base is anchored to the concrete.    It too rings till my ears hurt-I usually use muffswhen working   & I've got magnets all over it..

 My other is a 70 JHM on metal stand.  Given time, I'll build a wooden base of some sort.
