I set mine standing at a comfortable stance, pretty straight for me, hammer in hand, hammer head parallel with the floor, That is for doing all around work. Finer work you can use a stool if you are going to be there a while. I am assuming that you have one anvil and maybe a bench anvil, I know that's a lot to assume. Stands, sturdier the better. I do know a guy who has his 120lb anvil on a rickety stand made of 2x4's and it's on wheels. It looks scary everytime he uses it, and he uses it a lot, does beautiful work on it, not for me. 2x12's bolted together, steel pipe with a plate over it (fill with great stuff foam. it deadens the sound completely and if you don't want to move your anvil will do a good job of sticking it to the floor). There are lots of variations with lots of different costs and work. Stand where you want to work and picture your movements around the anvil. Do you need foot clearance? Where are you going to move? What type of work do you envision you will be doing. You might change all of that next year, but for now it will get you started. Take 10 and think about your shop and picture yourself moving through it.

Just a thought.
