Mike's point is that you need solid mass directly under your falling hammer to be effective, that's why you want to put the rail up on end..Planting it in the ground with a mass of concrete or a big flat rock under it won't hurt either. If you have a hard shop floor, put a thick plate of steel under it to spread the shock.
