I personally would not convert the hammer eye tongs since they are harder to find.
You don't need tongs to start so learn how to manage your stock to begin with. Do some simple hooks then make some leaves. If you have shorter stock, use vice grips.
After you have learned some fundamentals, then make yourself a pair of tongs.
