Wikipedia says [1] they built a lot of full-scale wood & fiberglass
models for non-flying planes. The real ones, airwothy or not, were
assembled from museums and collectors all over Britain (and Canada).
I doubt they blew any of them up.

And don't forget that in 1969 -- 43 years ago -- there were a lot of
WW II vets who remembered every detail of their war years. I was
working for one who served as an aircraft mech in the pacific fleet.

ObSmithing:

One more metal bit to my carpentry project: A door latch that dogs the
cellar door top & bottom to replace an assortment of crappy doo-dads
nailed on by klutzes over the last 100 years . The shaft turns in a
double ball bearing sawn out of a part for some kind of gym/exercise
machine. [2] (I was given a self-storage-unit-full of parts left over
from a failed repair biz for such machines.) The rest is jr. high
metal-shop except with a nice European-style forged handle suitable
for use with mittens on.
