When one looks at the tree rings back through time, or lake and ocean sediment cores, or ice cores...
It's evident that we live in real quiet times as far as weather  goes.

Yes, there are the tornadoes. They tend to level towns in short order.

Tornadoes can blow a post-beam barn apart in a blink of an eye.

Then there is the New Madrid Fault which last time is let loose in the
early 1800s changed the course of the mississippi and part of kentucky
became separated from the rest of kentucky.

Then there are the new fault that keep cropping up particularly in
Illinois. We were hit by an earthquake several years ago when a
previously unknown fault near troy grove, illinois made itself known.

Do not live to close to Lake Michigan. There is wind driven flooding
when storms windup and barrel down the length of the lake. Then there is
the lake effect snow every winter. Michigan and Northern Indiana are
always getting dumped on.

Then there is the beach erosion.

The rivers in northern illinois have been flooding with greater
frequency since the early 1990s.
