Larry, multiply your experience by 100 and you will have a glimpse of
what hurricane Katrina was like.
The sound was like a 747 airplane parked on your roof for 4 hours at
full throttle. My wife stood under the door arch on one side of the
kitchen and I under the door arch on the opposite side . We had to
yell at full loud to hear one another. The poor dog ran back and
fourth between us. The wind blew pine cones through the windows on the
north side of the house like rifle bullets. We had an inch of rain
water on the floors from sideways rain through the broken windows. We
lost 6 giant majestic oak trees that toppled like match sticks and
lost most of the limbs and leaves from 6 more. We lost countless tall
pine trees. I'm talking about 80-90 feet tall and 30"-36" diameter. My
shop was flattened like a pancake by a giant oak tree. The landscape
was completely changed. All of the familiar landmarks were gone. For 4
or 5 days after the storm there was eery quiet. No critters, no birds,
no bugs, nothing. We were 28 days without electricity. And we are 75
miles from the coast line. "And that's all I've got to say about
that."
