we think so highly of ourselves that we tend to think that things we have done and built recently, say in the last fifty years, are representative of all time.
However, in terms of Geological Time, we are wildly over-reaching. As recently as the 1930's, the entire Skagit River, which can be up to 180,000 cubic feet PER SECOND, decided to change its course- and, needless to say, it didnt pay any attention to zoning, where houses were built, libertarian principles, or governmental regulation- it just moved.

this kind of thing happens all the time, we just try to pretend it doesnt.
