As for building structures that withstand - not always feasible. My
friend Jim Loriega lives in Coney Island and he had to be rescued around
10:30 the evening of the storm. He told me they went from all is OK to
their basement full to the ceiling in 90 SECONDS. That is pretty
impressive. They escaped with the clothing on their backs - all else a
complete loss. His sister's house in Manhattan beach isn't even there
anymore as I gathered. Given the geology and zoning, I don't think you
could build a structure in a cost effective manner to withstand that.
