[TheForge] rule of thumb for purchasing new versus used equipment?

Depends on the equipment and the risk you are willing to assume.  For 
example, I personally would not likely to buy a Hardinge 59 (DV-59, 
DSM-59 lathes) sight unseen because those are most often in pretty 
whooped condition by the time they are retired, regardless of how good 
they may look and the cost of new headstock bearings will buy you a good 
lathe.

"equipment" is a very broad term.  I'm not sure I could think of a 
general rule of thumb that would be worth mentioning.
