Yeah, this light bulb law makes me crazy. It's okay to heat your home
with electricity -- unless you do it with 100-wat incandescent bulbs.
I'm all for making bulbs more energy efficient but not if we sacrifice
light output.
A year or two ago I bought three "100-watt equivalent" fluorescent
bulbs for overhead fixtures in my basement that can only dissipate 75
watt of heat, and used them to replace the 75-wat bulbs I had in
there. Suddenly my basement was so dark I could hardly see. Not only
that, but these bulbs took forever to ignite. I took them back. It
seems these things ignite slowly and come to full brightness slowly --
something they don't tell you on the label. But this does me no good
if I need light in the basement for only 5 minutes.
It's the one-size fits all issue again. We need to pass a law against
one-size-fits-all laws!
