Wootz was never lost, it was Damascus that was lost. People seem  confuse the 2 constantly. Damascus requires trace amounts of certain minerals, primarily tungsten in the woots, this causes a disruption in the normal crystal growth which causes the Damascus effect. The most likely reason for the disappearance of true Damascus is the loss of ore sources containing the proper ''impuritities''.
