Bruce,

A couple years ago we were at my daughters's house when we saw the power 
company trimming the trees along the high tension lines.  They were useing a 
helicopter with a 20 or 30 foot chain looped down form it, kind of like a 
chain saw without the bar.  They got the chain moving and just flew real 
slow along the right-a-way cutting off all the limbs that hung over the 
line. I have no idea what they did if they got the chain stuck, it might 
have been designed to release if ran in reverse.

There is also the electric chain saw on the end of a long pole that some of 
the trimming services use.
