That type of fastener is a decorative type, no positive connect. I have
used it with round, I would not use it for primary connect.

Subject: [TheForge] searching for old blacksmithing article, wine rack
built with square tubing fasteners.
hello;
i was attempting to describe to an acquaintance a wine rack that a
blacksmith had built using 1inch square tubing as the fasteners.
i remember reading the article but i do not remember whether it was a
book, the blacksmithing journal, a blacksmithing newsletter, etc.
the blacksmith would cut 1inch square tubing into 1 inch lengths.
basically, a cube of 1 inch square tubing. he would heat these to red
heat then lay the metal to be connected on the diagonal. he would turn
the piece of work over and heat the cube with a torch and when at red
heat he would lay the next piece to be connected on the opposite
diagonal. when the cube cooled it securely held the two crosscrossed
pieces firmly together.
i seem to recall he had made a tool that helped to shape the square
tubing so that the connection being made looked the same.
would by chance anyone remember reading/seeing this article?
