[TheForge] English wheel

Andy,
I mounted my dies running front to back to minimize the impact of the
lateral twist.
I did a test piece today, it was a bit heavy for a first project (14ga
steel). With light pressure the top wheel tracked a little off center, but
when I cranked up the tension it tracked in the middle where it belonged. I
dished a sconce with a hammer and then used the wheel to smooth out the
hammer marks. It was more work than I expected, but when I looked at the
clock it only took 10 minutes.
I make my bowls out of 16Ga. steel so they should be a little easier. None
are on order right now so it may be a couple weeks before I have one to
play with. I wrote my buyer that the wheel was done, and I would like some
bowls in her next order if possible.

If you have any problems, Wray Schelin is the man to go to. Nobody on
the planet knows as much about English wheels as he. He builds them,
uses them, and pretty much revived the use of them, I'd say more or less
single-handedly. There is nothing he cannot tell you about how they
work and how to correct them if you are having problems. He is big on
rigidity, so your lateral flex may be a problem, though I really don't know.
Write if you would like his address/phone.
