[TheForge] anvil from a combo tool?

I can't say for sure, but it looks like an anvil with machine vice combo rig. Seem a lot of the with the jaw broke off. I've even seen one with the jaw still on and in perfect working order. A hard thing to find since most seem to get the jaw broken by a hammer blow. Something a leg vice is designed for and a machine vice usually isn't.

Subject: [TheForge] anvil from a combo tool?

Hi --

A friend parked an anvil with me (acquired by the friend's father
probably before WWII) and I was wondering if anyone had some insight
into the beast. I've posted pics at
<http://www.ironflower.com/temp/anvil.htm>http://www.ironflower.com/temp/anvil.htm
. It's 8.5" tall, with an 8.5" x 4: face, almost no step, a stubby
6" horn, and effectively no tail. Imagine a 80 to 100 lb anvil
truncated at the beginning of the hardy hole There is a 5/8" square
hardy hole (which runs about 6" deep, then connects to a gallery
running horizontally to the rear face -- which ought to make getting
a stuck hardy out real interesting). At the rear where the face
terminates, there is a ~1/2" vertical surface with two steel dowels
(3/8" or so) extending rearward, then a shallow horizontal/vertical
jog, to a vertical face to the base. There is a 1"+ hole in the base
(horn to rear) and a large rod sticking out the rear hole. The anvil
is well anchored to a stump with no obvious means of
attachment. There are no makers marks anywhere I can see.

I think it's the anvil section of one of the combo tools (anvil,
vise, forge, etc). There are casting indications and the anvil
bounces a hammer almost as well as my Kohlswa. Does this ring a bell
with anyone?

Steve
