Americans size lathes by the diameter , so if the lathe spindle is 1.5 inches 
from the bed it is a 3 inch lathe.  Europeans measure by the radius, so the same 
lathe would be a 1.5 inch lathe.  If it is a 3 inch as measured in the US it is 
a Sherline.    If it is a six, then it may be an Atlas, but may also be an 
Dunlap made by AA products I think.   The Sherline is a keeper.  The Dunlap is 
wrong in all sorts of ways.  The Atlas is a little better.   Go to

are groups on Yahoo that discuss all three variations.

Jim;I have an old sears lathe too. I think that Atlas was the most common 
manufacturer for them.
