Tom was a character but a hellova blacksmith; we fought now and then but
I really liked him. There must be a plethora of Tom Clark stories. I bet
collectively we could write a book.

Subject: [TheForge] Starting coke
Tom Clark used coke in his school. He would have kindling cut into 1/2"
sq pieces 4" long. You would stack them up criss crossed about 3 high,
and douse with kerosene. Let soak in for a couple minutes and lite. Let
the wood burn down to mostly coal and start adding the coke. If you
have a wood stove in the shop you can just take a few hot coals from
that to start.
When taking a break he would have us put in a piece of wood about 1.5"
in diamiter down into the hot coke. The chunk of wood in the fire would
turn to coal before the coke went out. When the break was over just
start the blast and the chunk would relite the coke.
