Yeah they packed it out on their backs, it may have had something to do with
having pissed the base commander off a LOT. The parts of Alaska a travois is
practical is the tundra and it isn't moose country. Moose country is
typically packed with moose food, Willow, Tag Alder, Wild Rose, Devil's Club
and other low growing brush. It can be nearly impassable on foot, pulling a
travois just isn't doable. Winter is different, plastic tarps and plastic
tub sleds work really well and fit through whatever track you can force in
the undergrowth. A good snowmachine, say a long track is perfect for
blasting through the under brush so long as you're not to near the ground,
then it'll rip the skis right off the machine. not every time but often
enough some guys pack extras.
And yes, I was in the Boy Scouts when I made and used my first travois. It
was a first aid drill, we all took turns pulling a scout master a quarter
mile to camp. fun fun FUN, especially on the steep downhill. Running down
hill with a travois can be scary fun you know. <grin> Thanks for bringing
back an excellent memory from my kidhood, being in the scouts was one of the
best times of my life.
