[TheForge] Portable Military forge

Unfortunately, that military forge is damned heavy. The clay just
makes it heavier. Better designs are possible.

Go back to this page: http://www.habairon.org/forsale.htm
and scroll down a little beyond halfway to "Forge and Coal Sept 10"
with the photo labeled "Centaur Coal Forge" highlighted in red.

We have a forge similar to this on our NJBA trailer, and it's not bad.
Make the legs detachable or foldable (like those newfangled folding
chairs) and you'd have something really portable. Hoods like the one
shown in that photo can be made stackable, so four of five of them
take little more room than one (and would sit nicely atop a bag of
coal).

Caveats: The firepot MAKES this forge. Weld one up of 3/16" to 1/4"
plate, with tuyere pipe at least 3" in dia. If possible, use a
removable cast iron strainer over the tuyere. Some drain strainer
might work for this. (Ours has a steel strainer -- not removable. It
works. Sometimes burns out.) Give yourself 2"-3" to connect a
lightweight pipe to, no more, to save weight.

If you really want portability, avoid cast iron blowers. They can
work great, but they're HEAVY! A lighter weight blower, if you can
find one, will work as well.
