Jerry, your "moose" line recalled a story told by my wife's dad, then 
stationed in Anchorage circa 1946-49.  Jim was
a pilot flying C-47's up and down the Aleutian Chain & then led the 
survey team that surveyed for the DEW radar line.

A P-51 pilot decided to take target practice on a moose while flying up 
in "Nowhere, Alaska".  After returning to base,
he was summoned by the base commander.  There would be no reprimand or 
notice of this in his record on one
condition...

Return, by foot, to the scene, field dress & pack out the meat, donating 
same to some needy group, whatever that
was.  Jim said it took numerous trips as he had to pack out 1 piece at a 
time.  The meat stayed good as it was quite
cold, I guess that's normal for Alaska.

Said there were NO MORE INCIDENTS!  Everyone got the message.
