First I'd recommend not doing any mokume in your forge that you work steel
from. Especially when using copper alloys. I was always told that it leaves
copper behind and that it would keep welds from forming in steel. For
reference I have a book at home that's not too bad. I believe the title is
"Mokume Gane for the small shop" by Steve Migette(may have that last name
spelled wrong). If you have things done right you don't really need flux.
However, burning a little bit of wood in a forge while making the initial
weld seems to help kill oxygen in the forge and help with the weld. Expect
some delaminatikn at the edges of your billets and expect some wasted metal.
Part of the process.

I have been welding lamented steel (Damascus ) for going on over 20 years.
And I thought of doing Mokume gane. I read that you can use US quarters as
your start press, heat, then weld but could not find anything about if it
needs flux. Anyone got a link or a book on a simple start for mokume game?
Thanks
