Sez whom? If I read Ron's original question (muse) the point was that some
things are simply easier to determine empirically. I believe he chose a
light bulb as an example of a complex and/or unclearly defined geometry
(nothing to do with internal volume/capacity versus external
volume/displacement). In any event my point, trivial as it is, was the
importance of clearly defining and understanding the question before trying
to answer it. You say displaced? If the discussion had started with the
volume of slack tubs, pouring ladles and coal buckets I think most readers
would follow the discussion and interpret " How would you compute the volume
of a light bulb?" to mean the internal volume. If the discussion had started
out discussing the volume of anvils, hammer heads and tongs I think most
readers would follow the discussion and interpret " How would you compute
the volume of a light bulb?" to mean the external volume. In the case of
Ron's muse I fail to find any indication of which he had in mind.
On the other hand Andy, having read your comments for what must be 20 years
now I suspect you were just fishing for a reaction. =8^)

Volume in this case refers to volume DISPLACED.
You're welcome.
