I don't know about an 8 kW generator, but my little ~$350 3 kW job
from Harbor Freight allowed me to pump out the inch of water from the
basement.

TS Lee is headed your way, Andy, slated to drop 6"-10" on you and the
rest of Appalachia.  I think you were referring to TS Katia, though.
Weather.com says it's too soon to tell whether it will make landfall,
but probably will travel north.
