I immediately thought of Raney
nickel:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raney_nickel which is a catalyst
used to turn vegetable oil into trans fats for your margarine 8^).

Mix molten nickel and aluminum, then etch the resulting ingot to a
powder with strong lye.  The powder, once activated, is the catalyst.

But the Wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raney_nickel
notes that this can be done with other metals than nickel, including
iron.

Now WHY one would want an "aluminum steel" is entirely another question...
