I stuttered a bit on my typing. It should have been "corbel" - one ell. 

A corbel is the visor that Bruce is talking about. You bring the cantilevered brick out in graduations around the opening into the chimney, starting at about half way up the side. I looked and found a link that has a great discussion on chimneys:

It talks about corbelling a forge. (Two ells is the correct spelling here.)
