Wonderful post Steve!  I've saved it for my reference.

I already do some stuff similarly, as I use my mill to clean up my billet 
faces.  I'm planning to bring them into work for a final touch-up with the 
surface grinders.

I usually work with 1" wide stock.  I can get blue tempered and polished 
1095 from Admiral.  In the thicker stocks I just sand the faces clean. 
For your method, can I clean up the faces with glass beading, or will that 
interfere with the dry welding?

I was planning on 1095 & CP Nickel with .015" and .005" layers 
respectively, becase I wasn't aware of where to get 15N20 in .005" thick 
coils. Do you mind sharing your source?
