Assuming they are talking about Biochar, there is nothing ecoscammy about
it. It is simply a way of making hardwood Charcoal that burns the toxic
gases that would normally be released during it's production. Even if you
don't care about the environmental benefits you should like this much: It
takes up to 75% less fuel wood to make the same amount of traditionally-made
charcoal:

The process is easy to do at home, as that video shows.

The one issue that I am not certain about is whether the resulting charcoal
is suitable for use as a fuel. Most references I see for it refer to it's
use in gardening, it is not clear whether the hot burn burns off too many
volatiles to make the resulting product burn hot enough for use as fuel. If
someone has more info I would love to see it.
