What you are doing is shifting the environmental impact from the 
atmosphere to the ground water...
I am the last one to be considered an environmental nut case, but the 
effects of galvanizing poisoning  are no less real even though you do 
them 'outdoors' and have no impact on yourself.
The disposal of acidic zinc chloride or zinc acetate is is a further 
complication.
Why not just call your local fastener store or nut and bolt guy and buy 
some plain ones?
If you just need one, just forge it... isn't that what we are supposed 
to do anyway?
